Drama for Social Change
Sammy Moynihan is a theatre-maker, producer, and arts worker dedicated to using drama techniques to foster social change and empower diverse communities. He has facilitated theatre workshops in various settings, including schools, detention centers, remote Indigenous communities, and more.
Sammy holds a Master of Fine Arts (Cultural Leadership) from NIDA and has undergone intensive training in Theatre for Living with David Diamond, as well as training in facilitation with The Centre for Theatre of the Oppressed in Brazil.
In 2018, he toured France with Palestinian Organisation The Freedom Theatre, before interning at their headquarters in Jenin, Palestine.
At Rebus Theatre, he manages, facilitates, and directs numerous programs, including “Re-Emergence”, a film documenting the experiences of people with disabilities from regional NSW.
Education and Professional Experience
He’s worked on other notable Rebus projects, including Applied Theatre programs such as "Bridges or Barricades," aimed at addressing conflicts in schools, and "Acting Out," a film workshop for LGBTQ teenagers, and “Expressive Pathways” theatre-based workplace training for adults with intellectual disabilities.
As well as acclaimed work with Rebus Theatre, Sammy has directed productions with local companies, such as Tempo Theatre's "Jean the Jungle Princess" in 2009 and Mockingbird Theatrics' "The Door" in 2021. In 2020, he received an artsACT grant to develop a piece inspired by Ionesco's "Rhinoceros", using Applied Theatre techniques in the creation of performance work.
With his friend Marlene Radice, he is a founder of Shwa Shwa Theatre, which opened their first production The Cut by Mark Ravenhill in 2024 to critical acclaim.
Sammy's diverse experiences underscore his dedication to using various mediums, including theatre and film, as tools for positive change and community engagement. He explores complex themes and amplifies marginalised voices, fostering empathy and understanding in audiences.
